About Us

As is traditional in small, New England towns, Litchfield has a Board of Selectmen and a town meeting form of government. The Board of Selectmen is elected every two years. The administration of the day-to-day affairs of Litchfield is led by the First Selectman, Leo Paul, Jr., with policy set by the five-member Board of Selectman comprised of Mr. Paul and Selectmen Martha Bernstein, Ernest Bunnell, William Dranginis and Jack Healy. The Board of Selectmen also appoints members to all non-elected boards and commissions in the Town.

The First Selectman is a full-time salaried position; the remaining Selectmen receive an annual stipend. The First Selectman also serves as ex-officio member of all Town boards, committees and commissions.

The town meeting is the legislative body of the town. The annual town meeting is held the second Tuesday in January of each year. Special town meetings may be held as needed when called by the Board of Selectmen or petitioned by referendum. The Board of Selectmen meet twice monthly on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
