Dear Litchfield Community:
The town audit for 23-24 is complete. This audit included the Litchfield Board of Education and findings have been presented to the Board of Finance, the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education. Both the audit and the audit management letter are on our town website or via this link.
As you may have already read, the audit found a budget deficit of $518,458 in the Board of Education budget. Thankfully, the town of Litchfield had a budget surplus which will help us absorb the deficit, but this will not make us complacent. There are still many questions.
The audit found internal control deficiencies in the school district's financial systems so that budget overages were not brought to the attention of the Board of Education, nor the Town of Litchfield as required by state statute10-222. The audit also found that Litchfield paid above its allotted share (of 55.94%) for shared services and we will work with Warren, Morris and Goshen to bring those monies back to Litchfield.
We are currently gathering additional documents and will consult with our town attorneys to determine the next steps we should take. Thank you for your patience as we diligently work together to provide the information that taxpayers deserve.
We are planning on conducting a public meeting to
address these budgetary issues so that taxpayers can have their questions answered in a community-minded forum. We just want to ensure that we have the necessary information before proceeding.
