Responsibilities of the office:
The Tax Collector’s office is responsible for the billing and collection of property taxes and collection of parking tickets. This comprises approximately 89% of the Town of Litchfield’s operating budget. The office operates under the authority of the Connecticut General Statutes.

The office strives to work with taxpayers to resolve their tax issues within the limits of the Connecticut General Statutes.
Generally, questions concerning assessed value, adjustments, exemptions or credits, tax relief programs, and improper motor vehicle tax billings should be directed to the Assessors Office at (860) 567-7559.

Parking Tickets

For return of receipts, enclose your entire bill AND a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your tax payment.

Town residents can now view and pay their current and delinquent real estate, personal property and motor vehicle taxes online through Invoice Cloud. As part of LItchfield's green initiative, the new online payment and e-bill service offers residents more flexibility in paying their bills and helps the environment. The system is easy to use and allows residents to pay bills with either a bank account or credit/debit card. No registration is required to view an online replica of their paper bill or pay their bills. Payment receipts will be sent via email or can be printed directly from the computer screen. There is a service fee to pay online, but not to view bills or go paperless.

Tax Due Dates
Real estate and personal property taxes of $100.00 or more are due in two installments.
The first installment is due July 1st and the second installment is due January 1st. Bills of less than $100.00 are due in one installment in July.
Motor vehicle taxes are due in one installment in July.
Supplemental motor vehicle taxes are due in one installment in January.

I sold my car. Do I still have to pay the tax?
If you transferred the plate to a new vehicle, yes you have to pay the July bill. You will receive a Supplemental tax bill, due in January, for the new vehicle with a credit fro the old vehicle. If you turned in the plate, you may have the bill prorated. See the Assessor's web page.
When are payments due?
For the current fiscal year, the first payment is due July 1st and the second payment is due January 1st.
